During this COVID-craze I’ve found quite a few products that I rely on with a big “out of stock“ or “back ordered“ label on them. Frustrating. Lock you up in the house with your kids and then DON’T supply toilet bowl cleaner should be on the list of Chinese torture. Even if you can get your coveted items getting some of them within a timely manner has seemed to be an additional challenge. So what better time than now to go DIY.
DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Toilet bowl cleaner is a luxury in my house. Typically I rely on merely white vinegar and some baking soda but I’ve really been craving that fresh scent lately and it’s lacking in that method. Don’t get me wrong it gets it clean and sparkling and odor free but nothing beats a lingering scent of something fresh.
So I’ve been using this savy moms DIY recipe I found on her blog Live Simply, and really appreciating her addition of one of my long time respected cleaners, Dr Bronners liquid Castile.

I used a seventh generation dish soap squirt bottle and just ripped off the front and back labels. I appreciate the green cap too:) She demonstrates a scalloped black label added to the bottle that really makes for a nice touch that you won’t be ashamed to leave this bottle sitting around your bathroom either. I’ve noticed we use it more when it’s just sitting there atop my toilet.
PERK: my kids can easily use and seem to dig squirting it into the toilet. Even if they don’t swish with the brush well, the fizz and soap help unstick toilet yuck and keep it a rinsin’ with each flush. For the pennies it cost to make, I don’t mind either.
So far I’ve primarily used Dr. Bronners liquid Castile soap in baby mild (unscented) and 10 drops of Doterra Pine or Douglas Fir essential oil, but just recently tried Dr. Bronners liquid Castile in lemongrass scent vs using an EO and MAN!…..that…..smells……fine too!
In addition to Castile soap, it’s baking soda and hydrogen peroxide this mom on Live Simply recommends, and she clearly notes that adding the peroxide will release gas so to uncap the top, but I just used a larger bottle and only filled half way leaving room for increasing volume with gassing.
I used a piece of computer paper rolled up to make a funnel in which to get the baking soda into the bottle hassle and mess free; worked like a charm!

I’m still gonna use my vinegar in the bowl but only every so often to maintain hard water build up. Now that I have this bomb bowl cleaner for in between use that should do it.
Thanks, Live Simply, for posting and I hope my readers get as much use out of it as I am.
