Once in a while, or more often recently, morning coffee just doesn’t cut it. Has this ever happened to you before? I’ve often been here, where I’m threatening my morning coffee to step-it-up and gimme that greatly missed jolt n jitters, or else I’ll trade it in. But here I am coffee still the silent partner in my morning and I feel like I’m talking to a brick wall. I’ve had two cups and nada. Still tired, still slow and still looking for that kick-in-the-arss I need to dent my day’s to-do’s.
Turkish Coffee
My one last attempt to make my coffee count, I’m trying a Turkish Coffee. Ever heard of that? Me neither. But my husband took our teen-age son to get his hair cut at the barber before Christmas and while he waited the owner came out and offered him a Turkish coffee. My husband, a Dunkin’ Donuts drinker, quickly accepted as he NEVER turns down a cup of coffee. When the barber brought it to him, he cautioned my husband to sip slowly so it puts hair ON the chest rather than a racing heart IN it. The barber sneered we Americano’s have to be careful with “real” coffee. When my husband got home he told me about the Turkish coffee he gad and how he thought it was better suited for me, an ex-Starbucks drinker, because it was SO strong. He had me at hello! I immediately You-Tubed, “How-To Make Turkish Coffee,” but not having the fancy little copper pot they use to make it I scrambled in my measuring draw for the copper measuring cup I often use to melt butter over the open flame of my gas stove.
Step 1……I ground my favorite coffee grind, Death Wish Coffee Co. (Fudge and Hazelnut) til it more closely resembled flour.
, like they did and put two heaping spoonfuls into my little copper cup as well as a shot or two of water until the cup was filled about a centimeter or two from the brim.

Step 2……Babysit. I sat and watched for it to boil and all the grinds disappeared from the surface replaced by active bubbles. This happens quickly that’s why I say babysit; it’s not something that can be walked away from. But it took no more than five minutes and I got a stronger more flavorful coffee for my five minutes of patience. I let it actively bubble for three minutes (I had already had a less enjoyable cup this morning so I didn’t let it boil too long because I was afraid it would be too strong and I’d get a racing heart). Once it was done I just poured it directly into a small tea cup. There is only an ounce or two but that’s all it took. Wow! Strong, rich coffee, that didn’t go cold before I could drink it because of the portion size and no more was needed. That did it! Coffee counter closed! Turkish coffee it is for those mornings the average cup just doesn’t do it.

Boot 🥾 Coffee Altogether
Now there have been a few times, usually for Lenten or health, detox or intermittent fasting reasons I’ve booted morning coffee altogether for my Detox & Glow Shot. So I want to share that with you also while I’m at it. It can be a tea if your looking for something hot and comforting and comes out kinda resembling a hot toddy. Remember those? Only don’t worry, this one’s alcohol free. Or if your looking for a quick shot I do a cold ounce version.
Ingredients
Hot Cup: piping green tea, half squeezed lemon, grated fresh ginger to taste
Cold Shot: carrot juice, half squeezed lemon, grated ginger to taste
Side Note: Sometimes I substitute fresh ginger and lemon for a drop each Doterra EO and sometimes for convenience I purchase Bolthouse carrot juice over juicing carrot/ginger/lemon. I also on occasion garnish either hot or cold cup or shot with a sprinkle of cayenne or ground black peppercorn for different effects. Cayenne for circulation and heart, and black peppercorn for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and brain function. Also if your not a fan of carrot juice you can water it down with coconut water for extra electrolytes too.
A shot or hot cup of either of these are surprisingly energizing and invigorating PLUS they fuel me with electrolyte and nutrition rather than deplete me of it like coffee does. Coffee being a diarrhetic, sipping on it all day like I do lands me in crash mode shortly after so these are ways I cheat on my coffee here and there to jump start in a more healthy nutritious way or make the next cup of coffee count again. Try ‘em! Let me know what you think?
